I started Down To Earth Counseling to create the kind of space I wished for at so many points in my own healing journey—calm, grounded, and deeply human. A space where people could be met with compassion, and where healing could unfold at a pace that honors the body, mind, and spirit.
My path to becoming a trauma therapist hasn’t been a straight line—it’s been a winding, deeply personal one. Like many of the people I work with, I’ve carried trauma that didn’t always have language. I knew how to function, how to show up, how to care for others—but my own nervous system was often stuck in patterns of survival I didn’t fully understand.
In 2022, something small brought that into focus. I noticed that every morning when I went to put on my mascara, I would stop breathing. My body would freeze. I tried to will myself to breathe through it, but I couldn’t. That moment revealed something important: even though I had been trained in EMDR and other clinical approaches, there were still layers of trauma that talk therapy alone couldn’t reach—both in me and in the clients I worked with.
Camille is a trauma-focused therapist licensed in North Dakota and Minnesota with 8 years of experience. A U.S. Air Force veteran, she blends traditional therapy with EMDR and Somatic Experiencing. She recently finished her advanced SE training. Known for her direct yet compassionate approach, she integrates mind-body techniques to support whole-person healing. She also holds a 200-hour Yoga Teacher certification and offer care for adults both in-person and via Telehealth.

Office Administrator
Jessica Nelson, LAPC
I’m proud to be a North Dakota native, born and raised in Grand Forks. I graduated from the University of North Dakota with a passion for helping others and a deep interest in mental health and wellness.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent several years working as a 911 dispatcher—a role that gave me firsthand insight into the unique challenges faced by first responders, as well as the strength it takes to show up for others during times of crisis. That experience continues to shape the compassionate, grounded care I offer today.
I’m especially passionate about working with women and first responders, providing a supportive and understanding space where healing and self-discovery can happen. My goal is to create a safe, relaxing, and welcoming environment where you can feel comfortable exploring whatever you're going through—whether it’s stress, trauma, anxiety, or simply needing someone to talk to.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and staying busy with my kids. I’m passionate about running, getting lost in a good book, and baking—especially when it means sharing sweet treats with the people I love. These moments help me recharge and stay grounded.
At Down To Earth Counseling, I strive to create a therapeutic space that feels like an exhale- a soft place to land. Rooted in safety, authenticity, and gentle empathy, this is a space where your story is honored, your voice is heard, and your healing can unfold at its own pace.
Jessica holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology (2015) and a Master of Counseling (2024) from the University of North Dakota. Her crisis response experience has given her deep insight into mental health, inspiring her to pursue clinical training. She creates a warm, collaborative environment that empowers clients to explore their strengths.
Jessica is accepting new clients NOW and is available for in-office and Telehealth appointments.

Sydney VanSurksum
I am Down to Earth’s office administrator, scheduler, biller, and front desk receptionist.
I became a part of the DTEC team in October 2023. My journey with DTEC began as I was exploring mental health services within the Grand Forks area. After reaching out to a few clinics, I had the opportunity to connect with Camille, whose warmth and professionalism immediately drew me in. Following our conversation, Camille invited me to join the team in an office support capacity.
Alongside my role at DTEC, I am also a full-time student at the University of North Dakota. I am working toward earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Criminal Justice, and am completing the Pre-Occupational Therapy coursework required for admission to UND’s Doctorate of Occupational Therapy program.
Sydney is genuinely passionate about supporting the mental health and well-being of others. She finds great fulfillment in helping people, whether it’s through her professional role at DTEC, in her academic pursuits, or just simply in her everyday life with her beloved friends and family.
